Angela Babby
January 10, 2020 through April 3, 2020
Angela Babby creates master artworks using glass to tell the stories of her people, ranging from historical accounts to contemporary issues. Babby is an award-winning artist who has revived and combined traditional stained-glass techniques into a unique form of art: enameled glass mosaic. Much of her imagery borrows from ancient geometric designs used by her Oglala Lakota ancestors, making glass, a difficult yet beautiful medium, even more challenging to execute. The work is arresting for its artistry and use of color. Many of Babby’s pieces are notable for their content which often include a political dimension related to the story of the Oglala Lakota Tribe in Pine Ridge, South Dakota. She did not grow up on a reservation and did not become interested and steeped in the history of her people until she became an adult. Babby has worked persistently to bring glass art and Oglala Lakota culture to the forefront of her career as an artist. Angela Babby exhibits her contemporary glass art in galleries, museums and Indian Art Markets throughout the Western United States.
