Sentinels
Todd Anderson | Bruce Crownover | Gary Machlis
May 27, 2022 through September 21, 2022
Sentinels is presented in contiguity with the exhibition The Last Glacier Project also featured at Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art. Members of The Last Glacier artist collective, Bruce Crownover and Todd Anderson, with special contributor Gary Machlis, University Professor of Environmental Sustainability at Clemson University have collaborated on a new project to combine image and word.
Anderson states, “Over the course of three field expeditions spanning two years, we hiked and traveled throughout Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments to bring this book to life. Sentinel trees such as the piñon pine and juniper trees lead a tenuous existence; as sentinel species they can help us better understand our past, present, and warn us of the future.”
Sentinels: The Piñon Pine and Juniper Trees of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments, Utah (2017-2021) investigates the effects of aridification on piñon pine and juniper tree species in Bears Ears and Grand Staircase Escalante National Monuments in the deserts of southeastern Utah. The project culminated with individualized woodcut prints and an edition (of 11) of monumentally sized artist’s books. Fine woodcut prints from this book project will be featured in this exhibition at The Square.
These concurrent exhibitions, The Last Glacier Project and Sentinels, were curated by Nicole Maria Evans, Curator of Exhibitions and Collections. Exhibitions presented by The Square are supported in part by the Montana Arts Council a state agency funded by the State of Montana, Humanities Montana, National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the human endeavor, and National Endowment for the Arts. Additional funding is provided by museum members and the citizens of Cascade County, and generous support from Davidson Family Foundation, First Interstate Bank, and D.A. Davidson. Special support from Montana Woman Magazine and Printing Center USA.
